Helmets on and head straight into the mysterious underground to follow the story of slate and Mr Raab.
Do you know who started the mining of roofing slate in the mines in Zálužné in 1873? No, it wasn’t an engineer or a geologist. It was Johann Raab – a landowner and tenant of the municipal inn in Staré Těchanovice. And who did the work in his seven mines? Would you say they were trained miners? Wrong again! It was mainly local cottagers, sub-workers and cottagers who earned their living this way. Due to frequent mining accidents here, intensive mining of the black mineral had to be stopped as early as 1888.
