Do you know who started the mining of roof slate at the mine in Zálužné? It was no engineer or geologist. It was Johann Raab, a farmer and landlord of the town tavern in Staré Těchanovice. And who carried out the work at his seven mines? Trained miners, you say? Well, wrong again! It was mainly the local residents and tenants who wanted to make some extra cash on the side.
Up to that point, these people had only worked in agriculture and had had no experience working in mines. And it was this inexperience that unfortunately sealed the fate of many of these mines operated by Mr. Raab near the Horník brook. On account of regular mining accidents
, he was forced to terminate the mining of this black mineral in 1888.
So, put on those helmets and let’s go explore the story of Mr. Raab. Where else would you explore the history of slate than here, in the heart of one of his creations?
